Hand Pict's first commission for Channel 5 told the stories of transplant patients who discover that after their operations they experience changes in their tastes for food, character and even have visions which can in many cases be traced back to their donors.
The programme was filmed in eight locations across America. We interviewed a transplant surgeon and two specialist doctors in the field along with four patients - one of whom is still in touch with her living liver donor - with patients in Florida, Indiana, Boston, and New York.
Still controversial in mainstream medicine, 'Cellular Memory' research is still in its infancy but current figures show that between 8-10% of transplant patients have experiences which cannot be easily explained or put down to a reaction to anti-rejection drugs.
Many patients often find it hard to admit that they are feeling 'different' as most clinicians are dismissive of any such phenomena but gradually more and more stories are coming forward in transplant patient support groups set up to explore the psychological and holistic effects of transplantation.
